We celebrate every time one of our cats finds a family. But before adoption, we believe it's worth talking about the less glamorous side of the story too.
Not to discourage anyone, but because we want adoptions to last a lifetime.
Cats are wonderful. But sometimes they are also expensive, exhausting, stubborn, and surprisingly talented at turning your plans upside down.
Before adopting, ask yourself:
🐾 Are you prepared for unexpected expenses?
Vaccinations, parasite treatments, and spaying or neutering are only the beginning. Emergencies, dental problems, treatments, or chronic illnesses can happen, and they often require both time and money.
🐾 Are you prepared for a little destruction?
Your sofa might get scratched. Cat hair will end up everywhere. Some cats will knock over plants, explore every shelf, and decide that every object left on a table deserves a gravity test.
🐾 What happens if your life changes?
What if you move? Change jobs? Relocate abroad? Have children?
Your cat can't be put on hold until life settles down again.
🐾 Do you have patience?
Not every cat will curl up in your lap on the first day. Some need weeks or even months before they feel safe enough to trust.
🐾 Are you ready for a long-term commitment?
Many cats live 15–20 years. If you adopt a kitten today, there's a good chance they will still be by your side a decade and a half from now.
🐾 Are you prepared for the ending too?
It's the part nobody likes to talk about, but every family that adopts an animal is also accepting that one day they will have to say goodbye.
And yet, despite the worries, the cat hair on your clothes, and the veterinary bills, most people who have adopted a cat would do it all over again without hesitation.
Because there is something special about earning an animal's trust. About hearing a quiet purr at the end of a long day. About watching a cat who once had nobody slowly begin to feel at home.
If, after reading all this, you still want to adopt, you're probably starting for the right reasons.
